1 September 2015, Oakland California Mission

Hello there!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

This week has been a wonderful adventure!

I feel very blessed to be able to serve here in Oakland California/San Fransisco mission. I love our Mission President, President Frandsen and Sister Frandsen very much! They are full of ideas on how to improve and progress as missionaries in this mission. This is their home…

Sister Krylborn, Jarvi, Thomas, Liu, Chazen and I. Waiting to go to the Salt Lake City Airport! ๐Ÿ™‚

My companion is Sister Brown from Alabama/all over! (Her family travelled a lot in the military.) I love her and I know that we are supposed to be together right now. She is a wonderful missionary. She is very loving, hard working and obedient in all things. She is teaching me how to be an Oakland California missionary. She has been so patient with me as I have adjusted to serving here. There is so much to learn from her example :).

Sister Brown and I have been working hard to organize our apartment and our area book. Paper area books take a lot of time and love! Our Zone focus this week is gaining the trust of the members. Sister Brown and I have made plans to gain the trust of the Lord and the members by: striving to be exactly obedient, being on time to appointments, serving the members through action and prayer, teaching them doctrines of the gospel at every opportunity.

There is a lot of work to do here in Concord 1st Ward. I’m so thankful for the vision Sister Brown has given me for the ward. Brother Cook, the Ward Mission Leader is amazing! He is a leader by example. He often teaches members and investigators with us. He loves Jesus Christ and His Church, and He shows that love by devotion and service. I’m excited to serve along side the Cook family! :))

It has been a special experience teaching investigators and members in their home. There are many members here who are going through immense challenges. I am thankful for the Priesthood power that blesses and administers comfort to our brothers and sisters – not just in Concord, but to people all around the world.

1 Nephi 14:14 “And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld the power of the Lamb of God, that it descended upon the saints of the church of the Lamb, and upon the covenant people of the Lord, who were scattered upon all the face of the earth; and they were armed with righteousness and with the power of God in great glory.”

The same authority that Jesus Christ has was given to Joseph Smith by John the Baptist and Peter, James and John. Because God loves us, He has blessed us with a Prophet on the earth today. His name is Thomas S. Monson. He holds the Priesthood authority of God. It is here to bless us and to provide a way for us to be with our Heavenly Father again :)).oakland mission

I know that Jesus Christ lives. I know that Heavenly Father loves us and has a plan for each and every one of us. The Lord will do all that He can to help us return to Him again. I know that I am supposed to be here at this time. I pray that Heavenly Father will help me to do all that He desires of me.
Have a wonderful and uplifting week! Enjoy every moment…even the challenges :)).
Much love,

Sister Lyreche Tata

25th August 2015 – Last week in Temple Square before outbound

Boy I am so thankful for this week on Temple Square!

Tomorrow I leave for Oakland California/San Francisco Mission…This week has been so busy that I haven’t had a spare moment to think about it…That’s the way it needed to be, I think :). I have been so blessed to be companion’s with Sister Burke from Sunshine Coast, Australia! ๐Ÿ™‚

I didn’t ever think that I would be companion’s with an Australian or New Zealand missionary. I have been truly blessed!

Sister Burke has complete love for the people she teaches and for the Sisters around us. She loves everyone! That charity and love shows when she listens and values what people say. She is always happy and is always looking for opportunities to help and lift other sisters. I am learning so much from her! She is a great friend :).

This week I was able to serve in the Beehive House! The President Brigham Young’s home in Salt Lake City. Brigham Young is an inspiring leader who taught by example.

Brigham Young was the second President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was also the Governor of Utah and the Superintendent of Indian Affairs. The most sacred position he ever held was husband and father.

Every night at 6:30pm, President Young gathered family and guests to participate in a family prayer. This time was often not just for prayer. The children would give musical performances and have spiritual devotionals also. No matter what responsibilities we have, we can always make time for what’s most important and that is God and family.

“As a young boy, Heber J. Grant frequented President Brigham Youngโ€™s home. If Heber happened to be there at prayer time, he was invited to kneel with the family and participate in family prayer. Those prayers had a lasting effect on Heber. He later recalled, โ€œUpon more than one occasion, because of the inspiration of the Lord to Brigham Young while he was supplicating God for guidance, I have lifted my head, turned and looked at the place where Brigham Young was praying, to see if the Lord was not there. It seemed to me that he talked to the Lord as one man would talk to another.โ€” (Teachings: Heber J. Grant)

On Sunday morning, Elder and Sister Clarke came and spoke at our Sacrament meeting! ๐Ÿ™‚ Elder Clarke shared five points that we can all learn from and apply in our lives. . Make your life Christ centered. Your relationship with the Savior, Jesus Christ is vital and most important. Without Him there is nothing. No eternal families, no resurrection, no forgiveness. If people came to your home, will people that come in recognize that you love Jesus Christ? Put pictures of Him. Give an account to Him each day.

  2. Know that Joseph Smith was a Prophet and every day testify of Him. How did you come to know Joseph Smith was a Prophet? He has done more for the salvation of men save Jesus Christ Himself. Never doubt your testimony.
  3. The Book of Mormon. Do I love the Book of Mormon? When I have time do I read the Book of Mormon? Read the Book of Mormon every single day.
  4. Families. They are the most important social unit in eternity. Have family prayer and family scripture study!
  5. The Temple. Attend the Temple regularly! Work there! Keep your Temple covenants.

I love Sister Wong, Sister Rivas, Sister Rajah, Sister Taglavia, Sister Piutau, Sister Li and Sister Burke!! I have learned so much serving them. I have had so much fun this week with these Sisters!!! I will miss them. Their next District Leader is so blessed and lucky to be with them :))).

Transfer Surprises :)

A special announcement was made at Relief Society on Thursday morning. At the last week of Relief Society, the Assistants to the President present a slideshow to the mission to show who will be temporarily assigned to a different mission in the United States for 2 transfers and where they will be serving. As the last slide approached, Sister Isaksen said “These next four sisters don’t know they will be going outbound. They will be leaving a week later than the other sisters.” Then I saw my picture, Sister Tata will be serving in Oakland, California/San Fransisco Mission for 2 transfers, between 26 August 2015 – 11 November 2015! There are a few sisters who have come inbound to our mission from Oakland. I will miss Temple Square – but I look forward this new experience. ๐Ÿ™‚

Today at Transfer Conference,my love for Temple Square Mission deepened. This mission has my heart. I am thankful for the experiences I have had these past 9 months as a set apart full-time representative of Jesus Christ.

The last 12 weeks have been the most challenging and rewarding. My faith in Jesus Christ has grown through diligent study of the Book of Mormon, bearing testimony and hearing testimonies of others. My faith has grown as I have received answers to earnest prayers. My faith has grown as I have been guided by the Spirit about what to do, what to say and how to act. I know that Jesus Christ is our Savior and I have felt Him lift me at this time of my mission, more than ever before. Training has been a challenge. I am thankful for Sister Marroquin’s patience and love toward me. She has been an instrument in the Lord’s hand to help our investigator’s progress, to help members come nearer to our God and to help me become a more humble servant.

I love our departing Sister missionaries. Their advice and testimonies inspire and strengthen me. They each said something that I could apply into my life, they truly speak with power and authority from God. Sister Lytle’s advice to R.U.N is something that I need to apply more fully in my missionary work. The Spirit is key in this missionary work. Joseph Smith said, โ€œSalvation cannot come without revelation; it is in vain for anyone to minister without itโ€ (PMG CH 4). R: Repent daily. U: Unrestrained in recognizing and acting on the promptings of the Spirit. N: Notice who the prompting came from and acknowledge the Lord’s hand. It has always been my goal to strive to have the Spirit with me. I am learning to recognize and act on the promptings of the Holy Ghost, immediately. I am thankful for a merciful Heavenly Father who has so much patience with me.

Kevin, our investigator will be able to attend Church for the first time this Sunday!!!! He has not been able to leave home for many months. He is diligently studying the scriptures. He has read the Book of Mormon three times and feels that it is true. We are working together with the local missionaries and with the Lord, to help him overcome an addiction. I cannot understand how hard it must be for him. I trust that as he has complete faith in God – God will deliver Him out of this bondage. Through God’s mercy he can be freed.

I will miss Temple Square. I will give Oakland, California my all while I am there. Temple Square is the real Heaven on earth.

For a week I will be companion’s with Sister Burke from..Brisbane, Australia! Oi oi oi! :)) I look forward to serving in East 1, District 3 for this next week. I will give this temporary assignment as District Leader my best and my heart! ๐Ÿ™‚
I leave with you my feelings that God lives. His love is real. It was shown when God sent His only Begotten Son to earth to suffer and give himself a sacrifice for our sins. Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life and through Him and through living His teachings, we can live with God and our families again after this life. Heavenly Father hears our earnest prayers. He answers them in His way and time. The Book of Mormon is true and it will help us to know Jesus Christ better. As we apply its teachings will improve the quality of your life. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is God’s Church on the earth. If you have doubts, study the Book of Mormon, chose to have faith in Jesus Christ and ask God in prayer if its true. I know that by the power of the Holy Ghost, God will answer you. (Doctrine and Covenants 8:2-3, Galatians 5:22-23). In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
I love you.

10th August 2015 – Consecration brings miracles!

I love being a missionary in Temple Square! I love the experiences that I have, I love the people I meet and the missionaries that I serve alongside.

On Friday evening I was able to spend time with Sister Rajah, we talked about her mission mission in Montana, Billings and on Temple Square. I love talking with her – she inspires me to be a better missionary. She is a wonderful missionary and person. She said that while on her mission, she prays that she will be able to accomplish all that the Lord plans for her to. This is something that I haven’t even thought of praying for. I decided that I will start praying for this too. This is the Lord’s time and the Lord’s mission – and I will do what He asks. :))

In my personal study this week, I studied 1 Nephi 11 with the question of “How does God communicate with His children?”. Before Nephi was visited by the Spirit of the Lord, he prepared himself to receive revelation. Verse 10-11, “For it came to pass after I had DESIRED to know the things that my father had seen, and BELIEVING that the Lord was able to make them known unto me, as I sat PONDERING in mine heart I was caught away in the Spirit of the Lord, yea, into an exceedingly high mountain, which I never had before seen, and upon which I never had before set my foot.” Nephi had first a desire to understand the vision. He had faith in Jesus Christ and believed that he would receive an answer. He then, pondered on the words of a Prophet, his father, Lehi. When we prepare to receive revelation and then treasure that revelation by acting and recording – God trust us with more revelation. I know that God lives, because in the quite moments of the night, morning – God communicates with me through the scriptures. He wants to communicate with you, with all of His children.

President Poulsen talked a lot about obedience at Zone Conference. I have thought this week about a comment he made about sister. Sister Jin wanted to know how she could be the most obedient missionary. She didn’t want to know how she could slightly improve – but she wanted to know, from God, what she could do to be her absolute best. She was and is an amazing example to me. I know that obedience is key to being an example of the believers. I know that I will never be perfect, I will make mistakes – and God’s grace is sufficient. I do know, that no matter what, I will never stop trying to be all that God wants me to be. That is all the Lord asks of us – to never stop trying!

Sister Marroquin and I fasted and prayed for our investigators this Sunday. One of our investigators, Kevin is struggling with the Word of Wisdom. He wants to be baptized, but he understands that he needs to live the Word of Wisdom to do so. We encouraged him to fast and pray for strength to overcome this addiction. We fasted with him. We messaged him on Sunday afternoon and he said he just closed his fast. He did it!

I don’t understand how hard this temptation is for him, but I know that Jesus Christ knows. Matthew 4: 1-2, “Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.” I know that as Kevin, and as we have complete faith and trust in Jesus Christ, God will provide a way for us to do all that is required.

I love you all! ๐Ÿ™‚

Monday 3rd August – Reap an Eternal Destiny

President Poulsen invited us to study the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapter 5-7 to prepare to receive inspiration at Conference. Zone Conference was purely amazing. I received inspiration that I was yearning for. Tuesday night, I prayed to our Heavenly Father and asked Him to please reveal what He expects of me. My prayers were answered in ways that I did not expect, but in ways that I definitely needed.

zone conference

The training we received was all about purifying ourselves. Our strength as missionaries depends on our personal obedience and righteousness of character. “Sow a thought, reap an action. Sow an action, reap a habit. Sow a habit, reap a character. Sow a character, reap an eternal destiny.”

“The final analysis will be not your increase, but your heart and sacrifice.” President David E. Poulsen. I am striving to be the kind of person that Heavenly Father can rely on.

I found this quote on a piece of paper in our conference room early last week, it reads:

“Remember that if we resist correction, others may discontinue offering it altogether, despite their love for us. If we repeatedly fail to act on the chastening of a loving God, then He too will desist. He has said, โ€œMy Spirit will not always strive with manโ€ (Ether 2:15). Eventually, much of our chastening should come from withinโ€”we should become self-correcting. One of the ways that our late beloved colleague Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin became the pure and humble disciple that he was, was by analyzing his performance in every assignment and task. In his desire to please God, he resolved to determine what he could have done better, and then he diligently applied each lesson learned.” D. Todd Christofferson.

I have learned to love correction. At first, it was uncomfortable to give or receive correction. Over time I have come to understand that correction is given because of love. God does not merely want us to come to this life and not change. This is a probationary time, where we can work, perform our labors and prepare to meet our Heavenly Father.

This week I made a promise to myself – I will always be obedient in all things. When we are obedient, God will trust us. If no one else remembers me, I want the Lord to remember me. Matthew 5: 48 “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. ” I know I can not be perfect, but I will try!

I want to tell you about a man we are teaching, Ricky. He is special. His heart is gold. We met him by West Gate at mid-day. We were supposed to take a the Lake Ward Church of Christ on a tour but they cancelled last minute – that is when we met Ricky. He knows a lot about the Church! He doesn’t agree with all of our teachings (yet!) but that’s OK, he has not read the Book of Mormon yet. He loves the scriptures. I feel that he truly wants to seek Christ. I know that if he is sincere, he will receive a witness from the Spirit that this Church is God’s kingdom on earth. At first, Rick was not open to what we had to share with him. As we listened to him, he trusted us and started to accept the truths that we shared. As we were about to leave, He asked if we could pray with him. He prayed, and it was one of the most humble genuine prayers that I had ever heard. He is a special son of our Father in Heaven. Sister Marroquin and I are praying that he will be able to recognize the whispering’s of the Holy Spirit.

Sister Marroquin gave a wonderful training at District Meeting about the Role of the Spirit in conversion. She is confident in her teaching, testimony and her English. Sister Marroquin is one of the most sensitive people that I know. She is very sensitive to the promptings of the Spirit and to others needs. That is a gift that has blessed our companionship. I love her.

We watched this video yesterday, I loved it! Never stop trying to be better! You never fail until you stop trying. ๐Ÿ™‚

Pioneer day – 27th July 2015

Hello mum, dad and family ๐Ÿ™‚

This week, on Friday was Pioneer Day! It was so much fun!!.
We were able to watch the parade, the radio station crew were right outside of our apartment.
It was amazing to see people in Utah – members and non members, celebrate the pioneers coming into the Salt Lake Valley. Most of the floats that I sent pictures of, were floats made my Stakes in Utah. Very creative and talented.

image1n image2 image3
We were able to meet different people while we were watching the parade too. We met a man whose wife died last year. He recently had knee surgery. He said that he felt alone since his wife died and we asked if we could watch the parade with him. We enjoyed staying with him and learning about him :)). He will be with his wife again, but in the meantime, he is waiting on the Lord :)).

Sister Marroquin is doing great in her English! She is now in the advanced English class, she is progressing so much! It has been a lot of hard work for her, and we are seeing the fruits of her labors. She is comfortable now holding a conversation with a visitor in English, by herself! She impresses me :)), or rather, the Lord impresses me with the things He enables us to achieve!

Yes, I met Aunty Alofa, Uncle Andrew and Nicole and her daughter. I recognised them as soon as I saw them! They are so lovely. They brought me Hawaiian chocolates, spam sushi…mm I miss that stuff! I remember Mum making that for us. It was lovely to talk with them and talk about our memories as a family. They are lovely. Please tell them I am grateful for the food and the money.. they are naughty, they put money in my food bag. I love them, it was comforting to see family again ๐Ÿ˜€

Til next week,
I love you all.

20th July 2015 – Isaiah 2:2 Heaven On Earth

“And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lordโ€™s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills;and all nations shall flow unto it.” Isaiah 2:2. I see this prophecy fulfilled every day in Temple Square, Salt Lake City. ๐Ÿ™‚

I love being a missionary. I love the joy that comes from bringing other people unto Jesus Christ. I love seeing Jesus Christ change souls. I love laboring with Heavenly Father’s choice daughters and sons. I love being challenged. I love being changed. I love receiving revelation for others. I love who I am becoming because God is molding me.

Now, this is not always easy. But life never was easy. I feel the support of my Heavenly Father more on my mission than previously in my life.

Alma 34: 32 “For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors.”

We had eternity to prepare for this life. We have eternity to think of this life. We have a short time to live it. I will live my life as a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Our Zone, North 2, had zone training meeting on Sunday. The training was inspired from the document “Invitation to be Baptized” by a Mission President in Texas, Houston Mission. As I studied this talk I realized that I had not always invited people to be baptized in the first lesson, latest the second lesson. Sister Marroquin and I have changed that. We came to the conclusion, as a Zone, that perhaps the best reply you can get from an invitation to be baptized is “no”. If someone declines the invitation, we can ask “why”. This leads us to understand what concerns they have. Usually, if someone does not want to be baptized, its because they do not understand the invitation or the teachings of the Gospel. Sister Marroquin and I have invited two investigators to be baptized since Sunday and they both said yes! There are people who are prepared to accept this gospel. The baptismal invitation has helped us to discern who is ready to accept the gospel, and who needs more time.

I am daily studying the Preach My Gospel lessons and the Book of Mormon. I love these books! They are inspired from God. I feel the need to study the Book of Mormon to strengthen my testimony of its divinity. I have been studying the Book of Mormon seeking answers to the question “How does God answer prayers?”. I yearn to understand how He communicates with us – so I can better help investigators understand how they receive revelation. God answers prayers in many forms. In Joseph Smith’s case, He answered His heartfelt prayer offered in 1820 through appearing to Him with Jesus Christ. God answered Lehi’s prayers in Nephi chapter 1 through “a pillar of fire…he saw and heard much.” My faith that God will answer prayers has strengthened. God hears and answers sincere prayers.

As I was on exchanges with my District Leader, Sister Bi this week, we received a call from a lovely woman, requesting a Finding Faith in Christ DVD. (By the way, we answer the calls on the back of the pass along cards that you give out :)). This special woman wants to be baptized. She knows the Church is true. She loves it! The only thing stopping her from being baptized is her smoking addiction. Us and her local missionaries are helping her to overcome this so she can enter into the covenant of baptism with God. We pray for her always. She can and will overcome this challenge through faith in Jesus Christ. ๐Ÿ™‚

Prayer is a gift. God loves us. You are literally His spirit child. He wants to communicate with you. He wants to hear you and help you. Pray always. ๐Ÿ™‚

Have a blessed week. :))
